Salta and the "Train to the Clouds"
The city of Salta and its inhabitants, found within the seemingly endless expanses of arid land in the north-west of Argentina, appear more Andean in terms of physique and culture, marking a striking contrast with the heavily European influenced provinces further south. Surrounded by verdant peaks of the Andes mountain range, and blessed with a marvellous climate, Salta captivates with its beautiful colonial architecture and distinct Andean way of life. Around the city, you can hike, horse ride and go rafting.
You can take the famous "Tren a Las Nubes", or "Train to the Clouds"', an astonishing feat of engineering, which carries you through dazzling scenery on a panoramic journey through the mountains. You'll be amazed by the giant cacti, the striking rock formations, mountains hued in many shades of red and ochre, the stunning salt flats, and the tiny communities found at nearly 4,000 metres above sea level. Other highlights are the Humahuaca valley, its incredible landscape marked by the wonderful colours visible in the rock formations, Purmamarca and its 'Hill of Seven Colours', and a trip over the border into Chile to visit the awe inspiring Atacama desert.

Day 1 |
- Transfer to the airport for the flight from Buenos Aires to Salta.
- Reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel.

- Breakfast.
- Two day excursion in 4WD vehicle to the Humahuaca Canyon area, first driving
north following the tracks of the ‘Train to the Clouds’ until arriving at San Antonio
de los Cobres. Then to the Salinas Grandes (Salt Flats), and afterwards to the
village of Purmamarca (Hill of Seven Colours). Night in the city of Tilcara. |
Day 3 |
- Breakfast.
- Visit to the Pucarà de Tilcara (restored ancient aboriginal settlement), the city
of Humahuaca, and then back to Salta. |
Day 4 |
- Breakfast.
- Transfer to airport for the flight from Salta to Buenos Aires. |
